Elegy: A Literary Perfume Tribute to the Gothic Romance

Writer: Katie Gustafson

Some stories linger long after the final page has been turned. And it's not just because of their plot, but because of their ability to evoke, through the images and experiences of words, the deep emotions that shape the human heart. One way that gothic romances do this is through striking atmospheres that almost become characters themselves: windswept landscapes, shadowed libraries, and gray, cold sea-mists.

I've always been drawn to a well-written gothic romance for this very reason. My favorites are Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, and Rebecca, because of the way these novels capture this haunted, atmospheric feeling. They are stories filled with longing, memory, and a kind of bittersweet beauty that continues to echo long after the story ends. The mood of such stories can create a kind of reflective state in us, as readers. In this space, we often find ourselves lingering in the beauty of the past and emerging with a fresh appreciation for the present. Readers drawn to story-shaped scent can also explore Bloom’s full collection of literary-inspired perfumes.

Elegy is Bloom’s gothic romance perfume, created to capture the atmosphere of dark, windswept stories and quiet literary longing. In creating Elegy, my goal was to capture that same sense of atmosphere and reflection of some of my favorite gothic romances, but in fragrance form: the ghostly moors crying out for Heathcliff, the ominous seascape of Manderley, the way that Mr. Rochester calls to Jane across time and space.

In literary terms, "elegy" is traditionally a poem of remembrance: written to mourn, to reflect, and to honor what has shaped the soul and lingers in memory. Elegy, the perfume, draws on this idea. It is a cozy, complex, atmospheric scent inspired by reflection, old books, rainy afternoons, and the emotional depth found in gothic literature.

Where some perfumes aim to be bright and energetic, Elegy leans into warmth, introspection, and mood. It's like the calm space of a quiet library on a stormy day: the kind of place where thoughts, memories and imagination are free to wander and reminisce.

A Gothic Romance Perfume Scent Story

Elegy, Bloom’s gothic romance perfume, opens with the rich comfort of cocoa and coffee, creating an immediate sense of warmth and familiarity. These notes evoke the simple pleasure of a steaming cup of coffee resting beside a stack of well-loved books.

As the fragrance develops, the soft depth of warm cashmere and oaky resins emerge, bringing a velvety, woodsy richness and quiet complexity to the scent. These notes form the heart of Elegy, creating an atmosphere that feels both cozy and contemplative.

Finally, a subtle hint of fresh bergamot lift the fragrance just slightly, adding a delicate brightness that keeps the scent balanced and intriguing. It feels a bit like a touch of sea air, riding in as an afterthought to the fragrance, as if from an open window into the library.

Like a novel unfolding its mystery ,chapter by chapter, Elegy reveals its character slowly as it warms on the skin. The result is a fragrance that feels intimate, atmospheric, and deeply reflective.

An Oil-Based, Cozy Fragrance

Because it is an oil-based roller perfume, the fragrance wears close to the skin and unfolds slowly as it interacts with the warmth of the body. This allows the deeper notes of cocoa, oud, and bergamot to soften and blend beautifully over time.

Many people find that Elegy becomes richer and more complex after several minutes of application, creating a scent experience that feels personal and quietly captivating as the formula adapts to your body chemistry.

It is especially lovely during cooler seasons, when its warm and comforting notes feel most natural. However, Elegy can be worn year-round by those who appreciate deeper, more atmospheric fragrances. Light enough for daytime wear, but complex enough for evening as well.

A Fragrance for Lovers of Literature and Memory

Elegy makes a wonderful choice for those who are drawn to gothic stories, dark academia aesthetics, or fragrances with emotional depth and meaning. Its cozy yet complex scent profile makes it a beautiful option for quiet evenings, reflective moments, or simply for those who enjoy wearing a fragrance that feels thoughtful, cozy and complex.

Many of my fragrances have a floral heart, but this one is distinctly different: a great choice for those who love gourmand or woodsy notes. Like the poetic form that inspired its name, Elegy honors the beauty of memory and the quiet ways our experiences shape who we are.
