Why Tallow Balm Is a Natural Remedy for Dry Winter Skin

When seasons change, and especially when that cold weather hits, our skin has a tendency to rebel. Cold outdoor air combined with indoor heating creates the perfect conditions for moisture loss, leaving the skin dry, tight, and even itchy or bumpy.
And where I live, in south Mississippi, we can sometimes experience what feels like 3 different seasons in the same week (I'm talking temperature ranges from the 30s-80s this week). For myself and many others that I know, this can create these sort of "dry winter skin problems," or be a trigger for other, underlying skin issues like rosacea and eczema.
As people search for solutions to dry winter skin, many are rediscovering something that earlier generations understood very well: simple, nourishing ingredients like tallow balm for dry skin can be more effective than increasingly complex (and synthetic) formulations.
I have always been a skincare DIYer, but I first became interested in tallow skincare several years ago, following seasonal changes when my own skin seemed to flare up with redness and dry, itchy patterns. Over the last decade or so, I've noticed that this can be worse in hormonal seasons (like pregnancy) or during drastic temperature shifts. During times when my skin felt ultra-sensitive, I found that my go-to products weren't helping at all. Some of them (brands that touted gentleness, even) seemed to make the itchy redness worse.
I'm a longtime DIYer when it comes to skincare. However, a few years ago, I discovered something new and interesting. When it came to the very "dry winter skin" issue I was experiencing, I kept seeing the same natural remedy mentioned again and again: tallow!

Why is Winter So Hard on Our Skin?
Healthy skin depends on a strong protective barrier that retains moisture while also shielding us from environmental stress. During winter, humidity levels drop significantly, and indoor heating further accelerates moisture loss. This disrupts the skin barrier, leading to dryness, irritation, and sensitivity.
Chances are you'll probably know if your skin is having these issues. However, you may have only noticed something flaring up as you've gotten older (that's what happened to me.) Common signs of winter skin damage include:
flaking or rough texture
tightness/pain after washing with soap
redness or irritation
cracked hands, elbows, or dry patches
What I, and many others, have noticed is that conventional moisturizers may provide temporary relief but fail to restore the skin barrier itself...and the symptoms will just keep popping up.
The problem is that water based lotions feel good at first but often evaporate quickly, requiring frequent reapplication. For those seeking a natural remedy for dry winter skin, tallow can provide deep nourishment and moisture to the skin's barrier.
A Traditional Approach to Skincare
Long before modern skincare aisles existed, people relied on ingredients readily available in nature to protect their skin from harsh climates. Across cultures, animal fats including tallow were commonly used to soften and preserve skin exposed to cold weather, wind, and daily labor. In fact, tallow has been used for thousands of years to heal and nourish skin. You can read more about that here!
This traditional approach to skincare focused on supporting the skin rather than masking symptoms. Ingredients were therefore valued for compatibility with the body and their ability to provide lasting protection.
Today there is a renewed interest in time-tested skincare that reflects a growing awareness that simple, high-quality, natural ingredients often work in harmony with the skin’s natural design.
Why Tallow Balm for Dry Skin Works So Well
One major reason tallow balm for dry skin is so effective lies in its incredible similarity to human sebum, the natural oils our skin produces for protection and balance. Because of this compatibility, tallow skincare absorbs easily and helps reinforce the skin barrier, instead of just sitting on the surface. High quality tallow naturally contains beneficial fat soluble vitamins including vitamins A, D, E, and K, all of which support skin resilience and renewal.
A high-quality, well-formulated whipped tallow balm delivers concentrated nourishment that helps calm irritation, soften rough areas, and support lasting moisture retention throughout winter. One of my favorite ways to use it during "winter skin issue" seasons is to layer it thickly on my face before bedtime. In the morning my skin feels like new again.

Tallow Balm vs Conventional Winter Moisturizers
Did you know that many commercial lotions rely heavily on water, synthetic fillers and preservatives? While these products may initially feel hydrating, their effects are often short-lived.
Plus, many times the "star" ingredients boasted on the front of the packaging are barely even present in the actual product! You can tell from where it's listed in the line-up of ingredients on the packaging. The ingredients that appear first make up the highest percentage of the product. Therefore, if you have any kind of alcohol towards the top of a product list (which is surprisingly common in moisturizers) it may be actually drying you out!
Tallow balm works differently. Rather than repeatedly adding a quick blips of moisture that evaporate soon after applied, it moisturizes and also helps seal that moisture into the skin while supplying lipids necessary for repair.
Even better, supporting the skin barrier allows dry or sensitive skin to regain balance naturally over time.
Plus, tallow (and the whipped tallow balms we make here at Bloom) are somewhat naturally self-preserving when kept in a dry, cool environment. This means that there is no need for preservatives or additional synthetic or drying ingredients.
For individuals experiencing extremely dry or reactive skin during colder months, this distinction makes an important difference!
How to Use Tallow Balm in a Winter Skincare Routine
Incorporating tallow balm into a winter skincare routine is simple. Because it is highly concentrated, a little bit goes a long way! Here are some of my favorite ways to use our whipped tallow balms in my skincare routine, as well as a few favorites that customers have reported. Tallow balm may be used as:
A nightly facial moisturizer (you can apply it in a thick coat before bed)
relief for dry or irritated areas
Protection for hands exposed to cold weather
Care for cracked heels, elbows, knees or cuticles
A gentle option for sensitive or eczema prone skin
Applied underneath rubber gloves (beloved use for medical professionals)
Applied to slightly damp skin, the balm melts gently on contact, transforming into nourishing oils that leave the skin feeling protected and comfortable rather than coated.
Choosing a High Quality Tallow Balm
Not all tallow skincare products are created equally. Ingredient sourcing and formulation play an important role!
When choosing a natural moisturizer for dry winter skin, look for responsibly sourced tallow, careful rendering methods that preserve nutrients, minimal (and recognizable) ingredients, and thoughtfully prepared small batches.
Quality preparation reflects a philosophy of skincare rooted in nourishment, simplicity, and respect for the skin’s natural processes. At Bloom, I create all of our whipped tallow balms in "micro-batches" never more than about 10 at one time! I also use American, organic tallow and other organic ingredients from nature that love your skin.
The Bloom Approach
Our balms are hand whipped to create a soft, airy texture that melts easily into the skin. This whipped consistency allows the balm to spread smoothly and absorb comfortably, leaving dry winter skin feeling nourished rather than heavy or greasy.
In addition to grass fed tallow, Bloom formulations include sunflower oil, a lightweight oil naturally rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Sunflower oil helps support the skin barrier while adding additional antioxidant benefits, making it especially supportive for skin experiencing seasonal dryness.
Skin safe amounts of essential oils are incorporated thoughtfully, chosen for gentle compatibility with sensitive skin rather than overpowering fragrance. Each formulation is designed to support the skin without overwhelming it, prioritizing gentle nourishment and function over scent alone.

Returning to Nourishing Skincare
Winter has a way of revealing what our skin truly needs. When dryness, irritation, or sensitivity appear, it becomes clear that lasting moisture comes from ingredients capable of truly supporting the skin barrier.
Bloom’s whipped tallow balms are created slowly and intentionally, in small batches, with the belief that skincare should be both effective and comforting to use. Our balms have a soft, fluffy texture and are deeply nourishing, designed to bring relief to dry winter skin while honoring the simplicity of traditional skincare practices.
Sometimes the best, most nourishing care for our skin is not something new and complex, but something tried, true and remembered!
